About Capturing the Country

The Full Story

Our names are Ali, Anthony, and Jenaya. We are students of Curtin University, and through our studies of Digital and Social media we have been tasked to build and create a project that imagines new and exciting futures online.

Capturing the Country is a creative rural project that aims to let the people of country WA express how it is they see and feel about their hometown. Starting in Boyup Brook but expanding outwards, residents scan and/or upload their piece of media to be showcased on our website whilst having the opportunity to learn modern digital skills.

Our project aims to represent media from the country across our website and social media channels which, along the way, will also include guides on how to upload or create media using certain tools or platforms.

At the heart of our project is the creation of the South West's own digital showcase whilst learning about platforms. The residents of South West will have the ability to make personal contributions that they feel represent the South West to make this showcase come to life. Photo or video content, personal creations or art or anything that shows what Boyup Brook & it’s history means to you!

The Why

One of the biggest gaps in digital accessibility, affordability and skills nationally isn’t regional WA’s access to the digital world, but is instead the gap of understanding modern digital skills and online platforms.

So, while being a fun way to share a slice of the South West with the world through the web, Capturing the Country has been built on creating a safe space for the people of regional WA to gain the skills and tools to better navigate the modern internet.

It’s clear that the web and social media plays a bigger role in how the South West community functions everyday, but there’s so much room to learn more! A Facebook group is an effective way to bring notice to issues, to advertise, or to spread a general message, making this social media platform an essential form of communication. But heavy use of a platform like Facebook does not always equal strong digital understanding.

Capturing the Country exists to help South West residents learn about posting on the internet, showcasing how it can benefit personal and business communication in town!

How Do I get Involved?

Capturing the Country is all about getting involved! As we help in collecting media to build the South West's digital showcase, we are also working to build a network across the internet to question, share and celebrate what Capturing the Country sets out to do.

We are currently working across our website, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. While Facebook and Instagram will be our social media hubs, Pinterest will play a huge role in how we collect and share the South West’s media!

Learn exactly how to get involved and build some foundational digital skills along the way! Something sticking out to you or not making sense? Start a conversation on one of our platforms!
